ABOUT THE FESTIVAL OF TEXAS FIDDLING

This is the third collaboration between Texas Folklife and Texas Dance Hall Preservation in past two years and the second related to Fiddle Festival. The two non-profits joined forces February 2014 to present the highly successful Texas Polka Festival and Symposium in Schulenburg and again in December 2014 for the 1st Annual Festival of Texas Fiddling. That was a huge success with a loud clamor for a repeat this year The organizations' goals go hand-in-hand-preserving Texas roots music and the dance halls which are the source of that irreplaceable culture. Fiddle music and historic Texas Dance Halls go hand in hand!

ABOUT LA BAHIA TURN VEREIN

La Bahia Turn Verein was organized on July 5, 1879 by forty-eight German settlers living in the vicinity of Burton, Washington County, Texas. On June 24, 1884, the La Bahia Turn Verein purchased three acres of land or $90 and immediately thereafter constructed the first hall. This building was destroyed by fire on November 3, 1887 and a second hall was built that same year. It burned October 12, 1901. The present hall was constructed in 1902 and the organization has been a social center where members and their families could find amusement and recreation and where they could meet for dances and other social gatherings. From the original forty-eight members in 1879, the La Bahia Turn Verein grew to around 180 members or families in 1979. La Bahia Turn Verein celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1979, Public dances are held only occasionally now but instead of dances, the hall has been used primarily in recent years for family reunions, wedding receptions, and wedding anniversaries. Today the La Bahia Turn Verein remains an active and viable family oriented organization whose purpose continues to be the promotion of the social life of member families.
